On a day like today April 1

Marvin Gaye dies at his father's hands, one day before turning 45
Marvin Gaye was shot dead by his own father in Los Angeles, the eve of his 45th birthday. The author of "What's Going On", the album that taught soul to think about politics, ecology and war, ended up a victim of the domestic violence that had haunted him since childhood. A Greek tragedy in a Motown key.

Ronnie Lane is born, the bohemian heart of the Faces
Ronnie Lane was born in London, bassist and songwriter of the Small Faces and Faces, co-author of "Ooh La La" and "Itchycoo Park". He walked away from fame at its peak to tour villages with a circus tent, faithful to his rural romanticism. Multiple sclerosis dimmed his body, never his legend as music's most lovable soul.
