Al Green is born, the voice that travels from bedroom to pulpit

Al Green was born in Arkansas, the most sensual falsetto of seventies soul. "Let's Stay Together" and "Love and Happiness", cut in Memphis with Willie Mitchell, defined a new intimacy in Black music. He later traded the stage for the pulpit, and his Memphis church still hears him preach in song.

Lowell George is born, Little Feat's slide genius

Lowell George was born in Hollywood, expelled from Zappa's Mothers and founder of Little Feat, the musicians' favorite band of the seventies. His slide played with a socket wrench and songs like "Willin'" blended rock, funk and country with unrepeatable grace. He died at 34, at his songwriting peak.
