1926

Miles Davis is born, the man who changed music five times

On May 26, 1926, Miles Davis was born in Illinois — the trumpeter who reinvented jazz again and again: bebop, cool, modal, electric fusion. With 'Bitches Brew' in 1970 he opened the door through which rock and jazz merged forever, influencing everyone from Hendrix to Radiohead. A prickly, elegant genius, he understood before anyone that standing still meant dying.

1948

Stevie Nicks is born, the white witch who enchanted Fleetwood Mac

On May 26, 1948, Stevie Nicks was born in Phoenix — the velvet, mysterious voice that, with Lindsey Buckingham, turned Fleetwood Mac into the most successful pop machine of the seventies. 'Rhiannon', 'Dreams' and 'Landslide' carry her unmistakable signature. Shawls, tambourines and a mythology of her own: Nicks invented an archetype women in rock still inhabit.
