'Sgt. Pepper': the day pop declared itself a work of art
On June 1, 1967, the Beatles released 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' in the UK — the record that turned the studio into an instrument and the album into a total art form. Cover, concept and psychedelic sound defined the Summer of Love. Whether it is their best album is debatable; that none changed pop culture more is not.

Ronnie Wood is born, the Rolling Stones' eternal newcomer
On June 1, 1947, Ronnie Wood was born in London — guitarist for the Faces and, since 1975, the Rolling Stones, where after half a century they still joke he is 'the new guy'. His guitar weaving with Keith Richards, that art of nobody knowing who plays what, is an essential part of the Stones' sound. He also paints, rather better than people assume.
