Chapter 01 — Today in music
On a day like today June 4

The gig that changed the world: the Sex Pistols play to 40 people in Manchester
On June 4, 1976, the Sex Pistols played Manchester's Lesser Free Trade Hall before about forty people. In the audience were the future founders of Joy Division, Buzzcocks, The Smiths and Factory Records. Rarely has such a small crowd generated so much history: that night ignited the entire Manchester scene and, with it, decades of British music.

Michelle Phillips is born, the golden harmony of The Mamas & the Papas
On June 4, 1944, Michelle Phillips was born in California; her voice was part of the vocal fabric of 'California Dreamin'' and 'Monday, Monday'. Co-writer of the former, she embodied like few others the dream and drama of sixties folk-pop, between tours, love triangles and the Monterey festival her band helped organize. She outlived them all to tell the tale.
