Brian Jones is out of the band he himself founded

On June 8, 1969, the Rolling Stones announced the departure of Brian Jones — the man who had founded the band and given it its name. Consumed by drugs and sidelined by the Jagger-Richards axis, he left with an elegant statement that concealed an expulsion. Less than a month later he would be found dead in his swimming pool. Few rock stories are so cruel.

Nancy Sinatra is born, the boots that stomped harder than the surname

On June 8, 1940, Nancy Sinatra was born in New Jersey; in 1966 she stepped out of her father's shadow with 'These Boots Are Made for Walkin'', a female-independence anthem with an unforgettable descending bass. Her dark, sensual duets with Lee Hazlewood became cult objects and reference points for later generations, from Sonic Youth to Lana Del Rey.
