'The Long and Winding Road': the Beatles' last US number one
On June 13, 1970, 'The Long and Winding Road' reached the top of the Hot 100: it was the Beatles' twentieth and final single at the American summit, with the band already officially broken up. McCartney's ballad, adorned by Phil Spector with an orchestra and choir Paul himself despised, closed the account with perfect irony: a goodbye that actually sounded like one.

Rivers Cuomo is born, the nerd who turned embarrassment into power pop
On June 13, 1970, Rivers Cuomo was born in New York — Weezer's leader and patron saint of misfits with guitars. Between the 'Blue Album' and the confessional 'Pinkerton', he turned social awkwardness and obsession into perfect power-pop anthems. His influence on 2000s emo and indie is as enormous as it is discreet: half the scene came out of his sweater closet.
