Monterey Pop begins, the festival that invented festivals
On June 16, 1967, the Monterey International Pop Festival began — the first great rock festival in history. Over three days, America discovered Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar, Janis Joplin tearing herself open and The Who demolishing the stage. Woodstock would take the mythology, but the mold of the modern festival was cast here, at the height of the Summer of Love.

Tupac Shakur is born, the furious poet hip-hop has never replaced
On June 16, 1971, Tupac Shakur was born in New York, son of a Black Panther activist, raised between radical politics and the street. In barely five years of career he turned that tension into albums like 'All Eyez on Me', a unique blend of social rage and vulnerability. Murdered at 25, he remains hip-hop's tragic conscience.
