Glenn Danzig is born, punk's sinister Elvis
On June 23, 1955, Glenn Danzig was born in New Jersey — founder of the Misfits and father of horror punk. With skulls, B-movies and a dark crooner's voice, he invented a complete aesthetic that metal and punk keep looting to this day. Later, with Samhain and Danzig, he took that imagery into metallic blues. Thousands of black t-shirts testify to his influence.

Bobby 'Blue' Bland dies, the Sinatra of the blues
On June 23, 2013, Bobby 'Blue' Bland died in Memphis at 83. Nicknamed the Sinatra of the blues, he sang with a velvet smoothness that concealed all the genre's sorrow, on classics like 'Turn On Your Love Light'. His phrasing influenced generations of soul and rock singers, and his signature growl was sampled even by Jay-Z.
