Jeff Hanneman dies, architect of Slayer's most brutal sound

On May 2, 2013, Jeff Hanneman, Slayer's guitarist and key songwriter, died at 49. He wrote 'Angel of Death' and 'Raining Blood', foundation stones of thrash metal and of all extreme metal that followed. Without his fast, dark writing, half the genre would not exist as we know it: Hanneman was the quiet engine of one of metal's most influential bands.

Lou Gramm is born, the voice of Foreigner and of stadium rock

On May 2, 1950, Lou Gramm was born in Rochester, New York. As Foreigner's singer he powered anthems like 'Cold as Ice', 'Juke Box Hero' and 'I Want to Know What Love Is'. Few voices better defined seventies and eighties radio rock: power, melody and a range that filled stadiums without losing feeling. Underrated by critics, revered by fellow musicians.
