The Jimi Hendrix Experience play their last show, amid tear gas in Denver

On June 29, 1969, the Jimi Hendrix Experience played their final concert at the Denver Pop Festival, a chaotic night that ended with police firing tear gas into the crowd. Noel Redding quit the next day. The trio that had reinvented the electric guitar in barely three years dissolved just like that, amid smoke and riots: an ending almost too symbolic.

Ian Paice is born, Deep Purple's swinging metronome

On June 29, 1948, Ian Paice was born in England — the only member present in every Deep Purple lineup. Left-handed, fast and swinging like the big bands he grew up on, his drumming on 'Highway Star' and 'Burn' defined how hard rock should gallop. Half a century later he is still at his post, impassive, as if time were other people's problem.
