John Entwistle dies, The Who's silent thunder
On June 27, 2002, on the eve of a Who tour, John Entwistle died in Las Vegas at 57. Nicknamed 'The Ox', he revolutionized the electric bass by turning it into a lead instrument within the band's controlled chaos: motionless on stage, thunderous in the speakers. His solo on 'My Generation' remains the entrance exam for every rock bassist.

Chris Squire dies, progressive rock's cathedral bass
On June 27, 2015, Chris Squire — bassist and the only member present through Yes's entire history — died at 67. His bell-toned Rickenbacker, melodic and aggressive at once, set the standard for progressive bass on works like 'Roundabout' and 'Close to the Edge'. Curiously, he shares a death date with John Entwistle: a black day for bassists.
