Florcita Motuda: Forty-nine years without a reissue

Ilustración: Rebobinados

The whole of Chile sings a song of his and almost nobody has heard his album. "Brevemente… geeente" won him the prize for best Chilean performer at Viña del Mar in 1977 and has never left the country's memory; the album that contains it, the self-titled debut released that same year on a tiny label, spent forty-nine years without a reissue. Never on CD, never on streaming, nothing anyone could buy: it circulated among collectors, on inherited vinyl and in YouTube uploads. It came back on vinyl in April 2026 and on digital platforms on the eleventh of July 2026, the same day Raúl Florcita Alarcón Rojas returned to the stage. And when it could finally be heard in full, Chilean critics placed it among the high points of the country's popular music discography. The fact about the artist everyone thinks they know is, in truth, the fact of a work the country did not have within reach for half a century.

Curicó, the Conservatory and the name on his ID card

He was born in Curicó, in the Maule Region, the son of José Raúl Alarcón and Elsa Rojas Aliste, and grew up in La Huerta de Mataquito. His father died when he was eleven; he was raised by his mother, an amateur singer, and five sisters. He studied at the Escuela Normal de Curicó, qualified as a normalista teacher and worked five years as a music teacher in Santiago schools, until he entered the Conservatorio Nacional de Música of the Universidad de Chile, where he studied the performance of indigenous instruments.

Before he was a solo artist he was a band musician. In the early sixties, around the Conservatory, he passed through Los Best Sellers, Los Stéreos and Los Sonny's, who managed to record three albums for RCA, in the Chilean scene that ran in the opposite direction to the one up north; he also played in the orchestra of Sábados Gigantes, on Canal 13, and put together the Orfeón Municipal Motudo, an intermittent band of his own invention. The stage name dates from around 1975 and he took it from a poem of his own, "Mujer engrifada", which later became a song. He has explained it without any mystery: "As Raúl I was very shy." And here comes the detail almost everybody gets wrong: "Florcita" did not stay a nickname. He added it to his legal name as a second given name —it did not replace Raúl, it was added to it— so that his legal name is Raúl Florcita Alarcón Rojas and the Chamber of Deputies listed him, years later, as "Diputado Florcita Alarcón". The date of the procedure is not public.

Viña 1977, and the folk competition that never happened

The eighteenth Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar was held from the second to the seventh of February 1977 in the amphitheatre of the Quinta Vergara, and that is where the fact missing from every version sits: that year the folk competition was not held, so the musician of space cuecas and white dungarees competed in the international competition. He appeared with "Brevemente… geeente", written by himself, and took the prize for best Chilean performer. The international competition was won by Israel with "Song of love"; Chile came third with "De cara al viento", sung by Luz Eliana. According to the press of the day, he came on stage in white dungarees and snorkelling goggles.

What the country sings as a collective cosmic anthem was born as a private, failed declaration of love. There was a classmate at the Conservatory called Valeska who saw him only as a friend, and the song was for her. "Valeska didn't fit the song," he said, and besides he wanted to do it discreetly: he swapped the name for the word "gente" — people — and the private letter turned into a greeting to humanity. The most effective compositional trick of his career was, quite literally, crossing out a name.

The debut came out on Antonio Prieto's label

Florcita Motuda, the album, appeared in 1977 on the APRI label —Antonio Prieto's label— as an independent vinyl edition. There are ten songs: eight of his own and two covers. One is "Ojalá", by Silvio Rodríguez. The other is "La novia", the worldwide hit Antonio Prieto recorded in Mexico in 1961 and which, contrary to what almost everybody believes, was not written by the singer but by his brother, Joaquín Prieto. The debut of a Chilean avant-gardist came out, then, on a crooner's label, and repaid the favour by singing the crooner's most famous song.

What is inside sounds like nothing else from 1977. Folk and psychedelia in the same groove, cuecas plugged into outer space, mysticism, lyrics that are ironic and openly erotic: "El ajo", "Cueca espacial", "Tonada deliciosa", "Esa niñita del patio ya está bailando desnuda", "Cachitos para los cielos", "Mujer engrifada y bella", "Cueca calientita". It is also the only record of his career conceived as a single integral work rather than a collection of songs, and it appeared in a country where music played quietly because it had to.

More than twenty records came afterwards, between his own titles, compilations and collaborations, and not one of them with documented sales figures. But the debut vanished from the shops and stayed there for forty-nine years. In April 2026 the labels Kolala and Polígono de las Bermudas reissued it on vinyl from the original master tapes, with mastering by Ignacio Rodríguez and the participation of Alarcón himself, and presented it at the Feria Vinilo Garage of the Centro Cultural GAM in Santiago. On the eleventh of April 2026, in La Tercera, the critic Alejandro Tapia placed it among the high points of the discography of Chilean popular music and singled out "El ajo", "Brevemente… geeente", "Cueca espacial" and "Cachitos para los cielos". On the eleventh of July that followed, the album arrived on digital platforms and he played live again, at eight in the evening, at the Bar de René in Barrio Italia, with the Familia Motuda.

The longest title in the history of the OTI

The other life of Florcita Motuda is the OTI Festival, and the standard version —"he took part several times, with good results"— falls short and goes long at the same time. He entered at least five Chilean preselections and qualified in three: 1978, 1981 and 1998. In the 1977 one he took "Amor de manzanita" and did not qualify; what went to Madrid was "Oda a mi guitarra", by Nano Acevedo, sung by Capri. On the twenty-ninth of October 1978 he won the national final with twenty-three points from the jury among twelve finalists, in a choice the public found scandalous: an avant-garde composition as the country's representative. On the second of December 1978, at the Teatro Municipal in Santiago, with Horacio Saavedra conducting the orchestra, he came seventh of nineteen with seventeen points. Three years later, on the fifth of December 1981, at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City, he sang in twenty-first place, the last of the running order, and finished fifth, tied with Colombia, with eighteen points.

The record he does hold is neither the album's nor 1998's: it belongs to that song from 1978, which is called "Pobrecito mortal, si quieres ver menos televisión, descubrirás qué aburrido estarás por la tarde" and is still the longest title ever to have competed in the history of the festival. And the crossing that closes the circle arrived thirty-three years later: Jorge González covered it and released it as the first single of his solo return, the first with new material since 1999, recorded in Berlin's Mitte district and premiered on radio on the sixth of November 2011. González explained that in 1978 he was in his eighth year of school and that the song proved to him that another kind of lyric could be written, the kind that forces you to listen closely; and it was he who recalled, in that same interview, the record held by the title.

First place came twenty years after seventh. In between he went back to Viña in 1987 with a presidential sash as part of the costume, which caused controversy, and in 1988 he wrote the "Vals imperial del NO" over the melody of The Blue Danube for the plebiscite campaign. On the thirteenth and fourteenth of November 1998, at the Teatro Nacional in San José, Costa Rica, he won the OTI Festival with "Fin de siglo, éste es el tiempo de inflamarse, deprimirse o transformarse", a rap according to the press of the time: not a secondary prize inside the contest, but the grand prize, the twenty-seventh Gran Premio de la Canción Iberoamericana, with a statuette designed by Miguel Ortuño and thirty thousand dollars. He was the second Chilean to win the OTI, fourteen years after Fernando Ubiergo. That same year he released his first CD; in 2005 he came third on Rojo VIP, and on the twentieth of March 2016 he played Kidzapalooza at Lollapalooza Chile, in Parque O'Higgins, with "Mujer engrifada y bella", "Gente" and "Pobrecito mortal" on a children's stage.

From the Maule to Congress, in a cape

His political activism is older than his fame. He joined the Movimiento Humanista in 1971 and the biographical note of the Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional counts him among the founding members of the Partido Humanista in 1984 —the party was founded on the twenty-fourth of May that year and was legalised before the Servel in June 1987, the first opposition party to manage it under the dictatorship— although the party's own institutional record does not mention him among its notable founders. He ran for deputy three times and lost all three: in 1989 for district fifty-two, with six point one nine per cent; in 2005 for district twenty-six, La Florida, with six thousand three hundred and ninety votes; and in 2013 for district twenty-four, La Reina and Peñalolén, with four thousand four hundred and fifty-nine votes. He was elected on the fourth attempt, on Sunday the nineteenth of November 2017, for district seventeen of the Maule Region, with six thousand four hundred and eighty-two votes —two point six five per cent of the valid votes cast— for the Partido Humanista inside the Frente Amplio pact. He took office on Sunday the eleventh of March 2018, the same day as the handover of power, in his white cape of moons and stars and the antenna headdress he wears on stage. His own explanation was exact: "I didn't win, the deputy is Florcita Motuda."

Of his four years in the Chamber, the gravest episode is not the one about the costume. In August 2020 he began promoting chlorine dioxide as a treatment against covid-19, when the Instituto de Salud Pública had already banned its sale and warned that there was no scientific evidence and that advertising and using it amounted to a health risk. On the sixteenth of September 2020 the Centro de Información Toxicológica of the Universidad Católica reported five people poisoned in Chile, aged forty-five to seventy, with loss of consciousness, vomiting and difficulty breathing. He answered on Twitter that he was only studying information and passing it to the Minister of Health, and that his intention was not for people to use it irresponsibly but under medical supervision.

The Ethics Committee sanctioned him twice in January 2021. On the thirteenth, with a call to order and a fine of two per cent of his parliamentary pay —around one hundred and forty thousand pesos— for the placard he displayed in the remote session of the fifteenth of July 2020 on the first withdrawal of pension funds, aimed at the then Interior Minister Gonzalo Blumel; his defence was that the acronym on the placard was an anagram of "con toda mística". On the twenty-seventh it imposed on him a double maximum sanction unprecedented in the Chamber: censure and a fine of fifteen per cent of his pay for circulating intimate photographs of himself, and a second censure and another fifteen per cent fine for circulating intimate photographs of other people without their consent, close to two million pesos in all. The images had reached the Chamber's WhatsApp groups on the twenty-eighth of December 2020 and he put it down to a technical error when posting them. The chair of the committee, Bernardo Berger, said the conduct "was not in keeping with the standing of the office and seriously damaged the credibility of the National Congress" and that the sanctions were the maximum the rules allowed; on the third of March 2021 the committee rejected his appeal for reconsideration. He was the ninth deputy sanctioned for a serious offence in that term.

And there is a court file, separate from the ethics sanctions and best not confused with them. On Friday the eighth of January 2021 a former partner, identified in the press only by her initials, filed a complaint against him with the Sexual Offences Brigade of the Policía de Investigaciones, in Ñuñoa: it was not "a complaint of sexual abuse", as the first day's headlines had it, but an investigation into three rapes and one kidnapping. That same day he resigned from the Partido Humanista and from the chairmanship of the Culture, Arts and Communications Committee, framing his departure as a way of not compromising the unity of the constitutional process, and on the twenty-fifth of January he broke his silence and denied the facts. The case was handled by the Domestic and Gender Violence Prosecutor's Office for the eastern zone, which after one thousand and twenty-one days of investigation decided not to carry on with the proceedings — it notified the court that it would not continue with the investigation — because it had not gathered sufficient evidence on which to base a formal accusation; the Fourth Guarantee Court of Santiago upheld that decision on the twenty-sixth of October 2023. No imputation was ever formally communicated to him before a judge, he was never accused, and he was never convicted.

He did not stand again in November 2021 and his term ended on the eleventh of March 2022. Two of his bills became law, according to the Library of Congress. He later said on television that he would return to politics, and that this time he would go with the Partido Radical. He has not been a candidate again.

What to remember

The standard account of Florcita Motuda is the one about the eccentric, the cape and the antennae, and that account has a hole the size of an album. In 1977 he won the prize for best Chilean performer at Viña del Mar in the international competition, because the folk one was not held that year, and he released an album that Chilean critics were only able to canonise in 2026, when it was finally reissued from the original tapes. Between those two dates lie forty-nine years in which the record now considered one of the highest in Chilean popular music was in no shop and on no platform.

The rest has to be told in full as well. The record for the longest title at the OTI is from 1978 and not from 1998, and that title was rescued by Jorge González to open his return in 2011; he won the OTI grand prize in 1998, not a minor award; he ran for deputy three times before reaching the Chamber in 2018; he promoted chlorine dioxide while the Instituto de Salud Pública was banning it and five poisonings were reported; he was sanctioned for circulating intimate photographs of himself and of other people; and the investigation into rape and kidnapping opened in 2021 closed in October 2023 without an accusation and without a conviction. When that space cueca recorded on a borrowed label plays, there is the man who in 1998, on winning the OTI, said the Chilean people are happy with winners and that he was a failure, and asked them to be happy with failures too. Florcita Motuda is the stage name of Raúl Florcita Alarcón Rojas (Curicó, Maule Region, 15 October 1945), a Chilean musician, composer, performer and politician; he turns 81 on 15 October 2026. Son of José Raúl Alarcón and Elsa Rojas Aliste; he grew up in La Huerta de Mataquito and lost his father at the age of 11; he was raised by his mother, an amateur singer, and five sisters. A normalista teacher who graduated from the Escuela Normal de Curicó, he worked 5 years as a music teacher in Santiago and studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música of the Universidad de Chile. Father of Francisca Olivia Florcita de la Paz Alarcón, a musician and drummer, and of Lucas Merlín Alarcón Campos. "Florcita" is not only a nickname: he added it to his legal name as a second given name, without replacing "Raúl", and the Chamber of Deputies listed him as "Diputado Florcita Alarcón"; there is no public date for the procedure. The pseudonym was adopted around 1975, taken from his poem "Mujer engrifada" (single-source fact). Earlier bands, in the early sixties and around the Conservatory: Los Best Sellers, Los Stéreos and Los Sonny's —three albums on RCA—, plus the orchestra of "Sábados Gigantes" (Canal 13) and the Orfeón Municipal Motudo; records from that period: "La gran fiesta" (1965, Los Stéreos), "Discoteque" (1967), "Distorsionado" (1968), "El bueno, el malo y el feo" (1968) and "En TV" (1975), with Los Sonny's. The names and instruments of the founding members of Los Stéreos and Los Sonny's are not documented in accessible sources. XVIII Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar: 2 to 7 February 1977, Anfiteatro de la Quinta Vergara, broadcast by TVN and hosted by Antonio Vodanovic and María Graciela Gómez; that year the folk competition was not held, so he competed in the international competition with "Brevemente gente", written by himself, and won the "Mejor intérprete nacional" prize; the international competition was won by Israel with "Song of love" and Chile came third with "De cara al viento", performed by Luz Eliana. The title circulates in three spellings: "Brevemente gente" on the festival's record, "Brevemente gente (del espacio…)" in his biography and "Brevemente… geeente" on the album track. According to El Mostrador (14 February 2014), the song was written for a classmate at the Conservatory called Valeska and the author replaced that name with the word "gente". Debut album: "Florcita Motuda" (1977), APRI label —Antonio Prieto's label—, catalogue LPA-3002, Chile, independent vinyl edition, 10 songs and 35:35 running time; 8 of his own compositions and 2 covers: "Ojalá", by Silvio Rodríguez, and "La novia", written by Joaquín Prieto —not by Antonio Prieto, who popularised it in a 1961 recording made in Mexico for RCA Victor—. The rest of the repertoire: "El ajo", "Cueca espacial", "Tonada deliciosa", "Esa niñita del patio ya está bailando desnuda", "Cachitos para los cielos", "Mujer engrifada y bella" and "Cueca calientita". The album was never released on CD or on platforms until 2026: it spent 49 years without a reissue. In April 2026 the labels Kolala and Polígono de las Bermudas reissued it on vinyl from the original master tapes, with mastering by Ignacio Rodríguez and the artist's participation, and presented it at the Feria Vinilo Garage of the Centro Cultural GAM; on 11 April 2026, in "La Tercera"/Culto, the critic Alejandro Tapia placed it "among the high points of the discography of the country's popular music" and singled out "El ajo", "Brevemente… Geeente", "Cueca espacial" and "Cachitos para los cielos", describing it as the only record of his career conceived as an integral work. The digital release was on 11 July 2026, the day he returned to the stage at 20:00 at the Bar de René (Santa Isabel 0369, Barrio Italia, Providencia) with the Familia Motuda; tickets at $10,000 in presale and $15,000 general admission. No later dates have been announced. (1998, his first CD), "Todavía hay futuro" (2005) and "Florcita Motuda en concierto" (2006). The BCN counts more than 20 recorded albums for him, a figure that includes compilations and collaborations; there are no documented sales certifications for any title. OTI Festival: he entered at least five Chilean preselections and qualified in three editions —1978, 1981 and 1998—; in the 1977 preselection he took "Amor de manzanita" and did not qualify (the winner was "Oda a mi guitarra", by Nano Acevedo, performed by Capri, 11th of 21 in Madrid). On 29 October 1978 he won the national final with 23 points from the jury among twelve finalists, in a choice the public considered controversial. At the 1978 OTI Festival (2 December, Teatro Municipal in Santiago, orchestra conducted by Horacio Saavedra) he sang "Pobrecito mortal, si quieres ver menos televisión, descubrirás qué aburrido estarás por la tarde" in 3rd place of the running order and came 7th of 19, with 17 points; Brazil won with "El amor… cosa tan rara", by Denisse de Kalafe, with 51 points. That title holds the record for the longest ever to have competed in the history of the contest (around 99 characters). At the 1981 OTI Festival (5 December, Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City) he sang "Si hoy tenemos que cantar a tanta gente, pensémoslo" in 21st place, the last of the running order, and came 5th tied with Colombia, with 18 points; Spain won with "Latino", by Francisco, with 51 points. At the 1998 OTI Festival (semi-final on 13 and final on 14 November, Teatro Nacional, San José, Costa Rica), known as the XXVII Gran Premio de la Canción Iberoamericana, he took first place with "Fin de siglo, éste es el tiempo de inflamarse, deprimirse o transformarse", written by himself —the press of the time described it as a rap—; the prize consisted of a statuette designed by Miguel Ortuño and 30,000 dollars. He was the second Chilean to win the OTI, after Fernando Ubiergo with "Agualuna" in 1984. The 1998 title also circulates as "Fin de siglo: Es tiempo de inflamarse, deprimirse o transformarse" in the BCN and in the Chilean preselection. Jorge González covered "Pobrecito mortal…" and released it as the first single of his solo return —his first new material since 1999—, recorded in Berlin's Mitte district and premiered on radio on 6 November 2011; he told "La Tercera" that in 1978 he was in his eighth year of school and that the song showed him that it was possible to "write another kind of lyric", and he recalled the record for the longest title. Other milestones: in 1987 he returned to Viña del Mar with a presidential sash as part of the costume; in 1988 he wrote the "Vals imperial del NO" over the melody of "The Blue Danube" for the plebiscite campaign; in 2005 he came third on "Rojo VIP" (TVN); on 20 March 2016 he played Kidzapalooza at Lollapalooza Chile, Parque O'Higgins, with "Mujer engrifada y bella", "Gente" and "Pobrecito mortal", on a bill alongside Cachureos and Cantando Aprendo a Hablar; in 2018 he was honoured at the Festival del Huaso de Olmué. Political career: he joined the Movimiento Humanista in 1971 and, according to the Biographical Note of the Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional, he was a founding member of the Partido Humanista in 1984 —the party was founded on 24 May 1984 and legalised before the Servel in June 1987, the first opposition party to be legalised under the dictatorship—; the party's institutional record at the BCN does not mention him among its notable founders, where Tomás Hirsch, Laura Rodríguez, José Tomás Sáenz and José Luis Acevedo appear. Unsuccessful runs for deputy: 1989, district 52, 6.19%; 2005, district 26 (La Florida), 6,390 votes, 4.15%; 2013, district 24 (La Reina–Peñalolén), 4,459 votes, 8.53%. He was elected deputy on Sunday 19 November 2017 for district 17, Maule Region, with 6,482 votes, 2.65% of the valid votes cast, for the Partido Humanista within the Frente Amplio pact; he took office on Sunday 11 March 2018, the day of the handover of power, and his term ended on 11 March 2022. He chaired the Culture, Arts and Communications Committee between October 2020 and January 2021 and sat on the Emergency, Disasters and Fire Services Committee. On taking office he declared: "I didn't win, the deputy is Florcita Motuda." Two of his bills became law according to the BCN —Law No. 21,350 (bulletin 13502-11) and Law No. 21,117 (bulletin 11927-24)—; the titles of both laws could not be recovered in accessible sources. Chlorine dioxide: from August 2020 he promoted its use against covid-19 (Página 7 report of 14 August 2020), even though the Instituto de Salud Pública had banned its sale and warned in April of that year that there was no scientific evidence and that advertising and using it constituted a health risk; on 16 September 2020 the Centro de Información Toxicológica of the Universidad Católica (CITUC) reported 5 people poisoned in Chile, aged 45 to 70, with loss of consciousness, vomiting and difficulty breathing. He answered that he was only studying information and passing it to the Minister of Health and that his intention was use under medical supervision. Chamber Ethics Committee: on 13 January 2021 it sanctioned him with a call to order and a fine of 2% of his parliamentary pay (around $140,000) for the placard displayed against the then Interior Minister Gonzalo Blumel in the remote session of 15 July 2020 on the first withdrawal of pension funds; on 27 January 2021 it imposed an unprecedented double maximum sanction —censure and a fine of 15% of his pay for circulating intimate photographs of himself, plus a second censure and another 15% fine for circulating intimate photographs of other people without consent—, close to $2,000,000 in all, accumulating both offences because they were distinct conducts; the images had reached the Chamber's WhatsApp groups on 28 December 2020 and he put it down to a technical error. The chair of the committee, Bernardo Berger, declared that the conduct "was not in keeping with the standing of the office and seriously damaged the credibility of the National Congress" and that the sanctions were "the maximum the rules allow us"; on 3 March 2021 the committee rejected his appeal for reconsideration. He was the ninth deputy sanctioned for a serious offence in that term. On 25 November 2019 he climbed over a railing at Congress in Valparaíso, closed because of demonstrations, an act for which he was not sanctioned; on 8 April 2021 he was detained for being out during curfew without a permit, with an expired licence; on 5 November 2021 he sat on the committee reviewing the constitutional impeachment of Sebastián Piñera, which rejected its admissibility 2-2, and his intervention —singing, references to Ben Brereton and Marcelo Bielsa and the announcement of an album— was described as "shameful and regrettable" by the UDI deputies Juan Manuel Fuenzalida and Gustavo Sanhueza. Court case: on Friday 8 January 2021 a former partner, identified in the press only as "J. N.", filed a complaint with the Sexual Offences Brigade of the Policía de Investigaciones, in Ñuñoa, over three rapes and one kidnapping; the relationship described by the complainant runs from September 2019 to the end of 2020. On that same 8 January 2021 he resigned from the Partido Humanista and from the chairmanship of the Culture Committee, invoking the need not to compromise "the unity of the constitutional process", and became an independent; on 25 January 2021 he publicly denied the facts, stating that the relationship had been consensual, and admitted having posted the photographs by mistake. The case was initially in the hands of prosecutor Mitzy Henríquez, of the Ñuñoa local prosecutor's office, and then of the Domestic and Gender Violence Prosecutor's Office of the Metropolitan East Regional Prosecutor's Office, which after 1,021 days of investigation communicated its decision not to carry on with the proceedings, because it had not gathered sufficient evidence on which to base a formal accusation; the Fourth Guarantee Court of Santiago upheld the decision on Thursday 26 October 2023, a ruling reported by the press on 4 December 2023. There was no accusation, no trial and no conviction, and no public source records a formal communication of charges before a judge. The defence, led by the lawyer Lorenzo Morales, announced a complaint appeal before the Supreme Court in order to obtain a definitive dismissal, the outcome of which is not publicly known. The Ethics Committee sanctions of January 2021 related to the circulation of intimate photographs, not to this complaint. He did not stand again in the November 2021 parliamentary elections and later declared on REC TV that he would return to politics "again for the Partido Radical"; he has not been a candidate again. After winning the OTI in 1998 he told IPS: "The Chilean people are normally happy with winners and I am a failure, so I want to ask them to be happy with failures too."
